With the production of compressed air becoming more costly all the time, the challenge to conserve its use is of a high priority. with increased energy costs, this is true today more than every before, and will continue to be a major factor in coming years. One of the easiest ways to prevent the waste of compressed air is to eliminate the unnecessary purging of it on heatless twintower air dryers which use standard fixed time cycles. As a fixed time cycle dryer uses compressed air for purging at a steady flow rate regardless of dryer outlet dew point, there may be a considerable waste of compressed air when the dryer is being used at less than full capacity. Appl purge economizer controls monitors the outlet dew point from the dryer, and eliminates the purging excessive air. Not only do the controls reduce purge consumption, but they provide a tight tolerance around the set point of the controls. Standard controls are designed to provide a -40 pressure dew point at the dryer outlet. If the on-line drying tower is providing a dew point of -40 at the end of its 5 minute drying cycle, it will not be allowed to switch off line for purging, but instead it will remain on line and continue to provide a suitable outlet dew point. When the outlet dew point deteriorates to -39c, the tower is switched off line for regeneration, and the fully regenerated tower is placed on line for drying service. The same process occurs at the end of the 5 minute drying cycle for the tower that is now placed on line. Not only does the system provide automatic switching control, but a digital display of the dew point is indicated, as well as the number of hours that the dryer has been in the extended purgeless condition. Other valuable information which will allow the user to actually calculate dollar savings is logged and is accessible to the user.
