Welcome to Ashanti Gold Miners Consolidation
Galamsey is the word referred to as “gather them and sell” the small scale illegal mining in Ghana, where the miners mine subsistencely. This practice alone has created a catastrophic effect on the price of gold in Ghana. Foreign buyers are very much interested in the Galamsey as they buy from the local miners at almost nothing hindering the sales of government owned mines. Generally the galamseyers can dig only to a limited depth, far shallower and smaller than commercial mining companies. Under current Ghanaian law, it is illegal for galamseyers to dig on land granted to mining companies as concessions or licenses. Most galamseyers find gold in free metallic dust form or they process oxide or sulphide gold ore using liquid mercury. The number of galamseyers in Ghana is unknown, but believed to be from 20,000 to 50,000. The Information Minister recently claimed there are now 200,000 people engaged in galamsey, and according to other sources, there are nearly 3 million who rely on it for their livelihoods. Unemployment had been the principal cause of Galamsey and the activity is dated far back as 1874. Operation Vanguard is a Military Police Joint Task Force (JTF) set up by the President of Ghana in 2017 to combat the operation of galamsey in Ghana. Galamseyers are illegal miners and have over the years depleted Ghana’s forest cover. Their activities also pollute water bodies due to the crude and unregulated nature of the mining process. Many families gone on hunger strike and crime wake increase as little girls began prostituting for livelihood whole young boys went into arm rubbery The was the need for the creation of Ashanti Gold Miners Consolidation.
